The science of water

For Grade 4 students

This 60-minute hands-on science workshop engages students to understand the importance of water and how we can manage water sustainably into the future. In this workshop engages students to explore water’s role in our lives; nature’s job of recycling water; solids in our water; how water is cleaned, our regional water system, and building solutions to manage and sustain future water access. Following the workshop, students are challenged to complete an online water audit at home to assess their daily water use and further explore ways to conserve their water footprint.

Grade 4 Science

All living things sense and respond to their environment.

Matter has mass, takes up space, and can change phase.

  • Sensing and responding:
    • Humans
    • Other animals
    • Plants
  • Biomes as large regions with similar environmental features: biomes are regions grouped by similar temperature and precipitation (e.g., climate: long-term weather patterns).
  • Solids, liquids, and gases change with heating (e.g., boiling point, melting point [melting chocolate]) and cooling (e.g., freezing point [making ice cream]), and these physical changes are reversible.

Grade 4 Socials

The pursuit of valuable natural resources has played a key role in changing the land, people, and communities of Canada.

  • Physiographic features and natural resources of Canada.
